The world does celebrate 'Environment Day' each year, but many of us fail to perpetrate our fragments for nature, and we definitely can see that as climate change and global warming continues to grow like the number of people concerned about them. Some may doesn't know how to, while others may have their own drawbacks for not taking part in the salient revolution.
Therefore, below are some green cues which will help you to reveal how we, as an individual, can do our bit to save environment and make a difference. Read, learn and practice!
1. Shift from CFLs to LEDs and Solar lights :
Along with the golden rule of switching the lights off when not in use, you should take a look on the type of bulbs you are using too. CFLs not only emit greenhouse gases and heat, but they also costs 82% more energy than the energy efficient LEDs. Switch now!
2. E-bags :
Plastic is known for it's non-biodegradable nature. The polythenes which comes for free when we buy almost anything, makes a major portion of plastic waste and can't be reused for more than 5 times. Hence, it's good to ditch this development of men and switch back to the traditional jute and cloth bags which can be used for almost a lifetime and are a one-time investment.
3. 3 R's :
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. But how? You can start with reducing your energy consumption and electricity bill by switching off power when not in use. Also, save the fresh water and your water bill by not using excess amount of water, avoiding unnecessary washing, ensuring for no leakages and spin the tap off while the tap waits for you as you wash your hands and things off. Don't make it wait!
Use all items until it could no longer be used, especially plastics. This rule applies strictly to them. Keep reusing!
Don't get confused! It's reuse when you use an object yourself for the same purpose. In recycling, manufacturers transforms the previous object into something new. So for recycling, just hand plastics and other items over to a recyclist and see your product reborn!
4. Less driving :
Drive less. Use public transport and practice carpooling wherever and whenever you can. Save the bounded diesel, gas and petrol and some money too. Use cycles. Keep the air, fuels and your health safe.
5. Save trees :
After the stressful work in the polluted and concrete jungles which we call cities, who won't like to go on a vacation to a beautiful hillside or an island, where you can enjoy the beauty of nature? But you won't be able to do so if you can't do anything in return for tress. No saved trees means no oxygen and we know what happens next. So let's give something as a return gift too. Don't just save trees whenever you can, but plant new saplings too. Fun fact : 2 mature trees can provide enough oxygen for a family of 4. The shade, fruits and aesthetics are a big plus!
6. No more toxic water :
Untreated sewage, agricultural runoff, chemical wastes from industries, overfishing and toxic plastic waste has been posing a continuous threat to the water bodies and the aquatic life. Companies executing the above mentioned activities should be apprised to work strictly keeping in mind the effects on environment and strict punishment should be applied on offenders. Rural households must be educated not to wash clothes and objects in rivers and offenders should be fined too.
7. Save Water :
Only 1% of water on earth is fit to drink and it is supplied to us everyday. It won't be long until it runs out and we regret our choices. Hence, fix the leakages and reuse water. Using as much as needed and steering clear of excessive and unnecessary use will help us to push the day of doom as far as we can and give scientists the time they need to invent a 'fresh water from salt water' generating apparatus.
8. Go Digital :
Not only for the sake of modernization and development, but keeping in mind the environment too, you should choose to go digital. Saving the paperwork is equal to saving the trees. Also, the comfort we can achieve of keeping all the documents in the same place, the thought is so fine!
9. Volunteer :
Volunteer for a good cause! As unfortunate as it is, NGOs and other groups usually don't have a good budget to perform the good deeds. Hence, help them and yourself out. This earth belongs to you too and you should take care of it as much as anyone else should. Even if it is without being paid. We all take care of our homes without paying ourselves. Isn't earth considered an abode for humans too?
Hope you find your way in helping mother nature to be fit and healthy. Don't just practice it for a day, but for the whole year and compare your achievements each year. Cause change will effect you too, good or not. Best of luck!
